Sabretooths like Smilodon fatalis had some pretty intimidating teeth, but it turns out that those teeth were, because of their shape, more prone to fracture than modern cats’ canines and could break more easily if hit from the side. But sabretooths had another weapon in their arsenal, according to a new study: incredibly powerful forelimbs, disproportionately stronger than those of modern cats, that were used to pin their prey down before administering the fatal nom.
